HAROLD F. “SONNY”

WAKELING JR.

Limestone – Harold F. “Sonny” Wakeling Jr., 87, passed away Tuesday morning, July 30, 2019 at a Caribou healthcare facility, following a brief illness. He was born March 28, 1932 in Fort Fairfield, the son of Harold F. Sr. and Velma P. (Hitchcock) Wakeling. He attended Fort Fairfield schools and served his country during the Korean War, earning the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, Combat Infantry Badge, the Presidential Unit Citation, and a Purple Heart. He had been employed by the A & P Processing Plant, later Interstate Foods for 27 years in their maintenance department. Sonny attended the Limestone Methodist Church, and was a member of the VFW Post No. 9389, Caribou, and the Disabled American Veterans, Smart Ricker Chapter 10, Presque Isle. Sonny greatly enjoyed the outdoors, especially hunting and fishing. In addition to his parents, Sonny was predeceased by two brothers, Ralph J. “Jimmy” and Frederick Wakeling; three sisters, Joyce Landry, Gloria Wakeling, and Hazel Giberson. He is survived by one son, Stephen F. Wakeling of Anderson, SC; two daughters, Michelle I. Wakeling of Anderson, SC, Denise Burdette and her husband Bill of Iva, SC; five grandchildren, Kristofer Wakeling of Bay City, MI, Jonathan Weaver, Cassidy Weaver, both of Anderson, SC, Meghan Kidd of Fayetteville, TN, Caleb Burdette of Iva, SC; twelve great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. A graveside service with military honors was conducted Saturday August 3, 2019 at 10:00 a.m. at the Riverside Cemetery, Fort Fairfield. In lieu of flowers, those who wish may contribute in memory of Mr. Wakeling to the Korean War Veterans Association, P.O. Box 407, Charleston, IL 61920. The Wakeling family wishes to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the staff of the Maine Veterans Home for the exceptional care and compassion shown to Sonny and his family during his illness.
