PHILIP R. HATHAWAY

Houlton & Fort Fairfield – Philip R. Hathaway, 76, husband of Nancy L. (O’Neal) Hathaway, passed away Friday afternoon, March 12, 2021 at the Aroostook House of Comfort, Presque Isle, following an extended illness. He was born January 23, 1945 in Fort Fairfield, the son of John Edgar and Nellie M. (Walker) Hathaway. Phil was a graduate of the Fort Fairfield High School, Class of 1963, and went on to serve his country with the United States Army from 1965 to 1967, stationed in Korea. He was married to Nancy L. O’Neal on March 15, 1966, and enjoyed a long career in banking, first with First National Bank, and later Depositor’s Trust Company, and Key Bank in Fort Fairfield where he served as Vice President. He then became employed with Katahdin Trust Company in Patten were he served as Chief Executive Officer. Following his banking career, Phil became employed by the United States Customs and Immigration Service, working as an Immigration Officer at the Houlton Port of Entry until his retirement. Phil was an extremely active and giving communicant of St. Mary’s of the Visitation Catholic Church, Houlton, where he served as Eucharistic Minister, Alter Server, and generously volunteered his time in numerous capacities. Phil served as past Grand Knight with the Houlton Knights of Columbus, and as a private pilot enjoyed aviation and rocketry, was a member of the National Association of Rocketry, and the Northern Maine Wood Turners, Houlton. In addition to his parents, Phil was predeceased by one brother, Sterling Hathaway; one sister-in-law, Mrs. E. Arnold (Shirley) Hathaway. He is survived by his wife of nearly fifty-five years, Nancy Hathaway of Houlton; two daughters, Michelle R. Hathaway, Melanie Stewart and her husband Robert, all of Houlton; two grandchildren, Justin Stewart and his wife Lindsay of Bangor, Marcy Hernandez and her companion Kieran Nichols of Casco; one special great granddaughter, Molly Stewart of Bangor; one brother, E. Arnold Hathaway; one sister-in-law, Mrs. Sterling (Carole) Hathaway, both of Fort Fairfield; several nieces and nephews. The Hathaway family wishes to express their sincere and heartfelt gratitude to Ron and Kathy Dee of Houlton; nephew, David O’Neal and his wife Trudy of Fort Fairfield; and nephew, Larry O’Neal of Houlton, for their wonderful care and support during Phil’s illness, and a special thank you to Rick Duncan and the Aroostook House of Comfort, whose professional and compassionate care to both Phil and his family provided so much comfort to them during his final days, you are all very special people. Friends called Wednesday March 17, 2021 from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. at the Giberson-Dorsey Funeral Home and Cremation Service, 144 Main Street, Fort Fairfield. Due to the current restrictions on gatherings, a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated privately by the family at St. Mary’s of the Visitation Catholic Church, Houlton.
