Coronavirus Engineered and Patented in 2015

A coronavirus similar to that which has received much attention in the news media lately appears to have been artificially engineered and patented for use in flu vaccines in 2015.

The patent is available at and details the efforts of the Pirbright Institute to create the virus.

The synopsis at the beginning of the patent explains, “The present invention provides a live, attenuated coronavirus comprising a variant replicase gene encoding polyproteins comprising a mutation in one or more of non-structural protein(s) (nsp)-10, nsp-14, nsp-15 or nsp-16. The coronavirus may be used as a vaccine for treating and/or preventing a disease, such as infectious bronchitis, in a subject.”

The patent goes on in the description to state, “The present invention relates to an attenuated coronavirus comprising a variant replicase gene, which causes the virus to have reduced pathogenicity. The present invention also relates to the use of such a coronavirus in a vaccine to prevent and/or treat a disease.”

Following the announcement from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) that it has declared the coronavirus a nationwide public health emergency, emergency physicians are taking the threat of an outbreak seriously, but stress that the risk to the broader public remains low.

“At this time, the risk in the U.S. of contracting coronavirus remains low,” said William Jaquis, MD, FACEP, president of the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP). “It is important to understand your risk factors and practice good hygiene.”

It is not certain at this time whether this patented virus was used in vaccines, or can be linked to the recent outbreak of Coronavirus in Asia.

The best defense against flu and other viruses is to maintain a strong, healthy immune system by eating a proper diet and getting plenty of rest.  Vaccines are not a very reliable defense against viruses because they simply stimulate the immune system, they don’t actually kill viruses.  With some vaccines, toxic additives may cause more harm than good.
