Standoff Over
Fort Fairfield Journal October 22, 2013 State Police say an Amity man surrendered peacefully this afternoon at his remote camp site following a day long standoff with Troopers in Amity, which is about 20 miles south of Houlton. Charged with criminal threatening with a dangerous weapon is 65 year old Gary Knapp, who lives in a small camper, off the Monument Road in Amity. Knapp surrendered and walked out of the woods unarmed about 3pm after State Police negotiators convinced him by PA system to end the standoff. He is charged with threatening his brother – Larry Knapp – at an adjacent cabin last night with a rifle. Gary Knapp was taken to the Aroostook County Jail. His camper was located deep in the woods. Members of the State Police tactical team and negotiators traveled to Amity to join Troopers, who had been called to the site this morning. A rifle was recovered from the camper site in the woods.
