Senator Collins Invites “Amstapo" to Retool FEMA

By: David Deschesne

Fort Fairfield Journal | February 15, 2006

In June 1935, when Colonel Alfred Jodl became head of Adolph Hitler’s Home Defense Department, the Geheime Staatspolizei (GESTAPO) - NAZI Germany’s “Secret State Police” - had already been in existence for nearly two years. At the time, most Americans would have quivered at the thought of such a massive, dictatorial police-state apparatus in the United States. That is, until today.

President Bush’s cabinet level Department of Homeland Security has morphed into a neo-Gestapo - an “Amstapo” - or American State Police.

According to, in December 2004, the Department of Homeland Security hired former KGB Chief Yevgeni Primakov and former East German Staats Sicherheitsdienst (STASI) chief, Markus Wolfe as advisors to the DHS. Strangely enough, Wolfe was denied a Visa seven years earlier, because according to the indymedia site, he was listed as a “terrorist” on U.S. government watch lists.

Senator Collins recently invited the DHS, presumably with former KGB and STASI representatives in tow, to assist in reforming the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) after its recent debacle in Louisiana.

In a letter to DHS Secretary Michael Chertoff, Senator Collins wrote: “We understand that you are planning soon to announce a proposal to "retool" the Federal Emergency Management Agency as a result of its failure to adequately prepare for and respond to Hurricane Katrina. As you know, we have been leading an extensive investigation into the preparedness for and response to Hurricane Katrina and we expect the investigation to yield a number of recommendations for improving the Department of Homeland Security's capabilities. We invite you to work with us as you develop your proposal.”

The problems Senator Collins is addressing relate to FEMA’s purposefully sabotaging local communications, turning back volunteer rescuers and otherwise disrupting the flow of local emergency management services in Louisiana during the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

Senator Collins hopes to quash one Federal Government Agency’s inadequacies by utilizing yet another Federal Government Agency.

Collins goes on in her letter to Chertoff, “...we invite you to work with us to achieve a consensus agenda for retooling the Department to better respond to the next catastrophe. If we produce separate agendas, we risk conflict and a fragmented approach. But if we work together, our chances of achieving success multiply.”

One supporter of the retooling of FEMA by the DHS suggested, “Maybe the KGB and STASI agents in the DHS will do a good job at reforming FEMA.”
