Town Council Votes to Raise Mil Rate By: David Deschesne Fort Fairfield Journal, October 3, 2012 With former town councilman Ruel Flannery’s mantra of “no new taxes” fading from the halls, the Fort Fairfield town council recently voted to raise the mil rate to 23 mils. The last mil rate increase was in 2006 when it was increased to 21.75. “This has absolutely nothing to do with increased expenses but has everything to do with decreased revenue,” said town manager, Dan Foster. “We're working hard at making up those lost revenues. I really thought we were going to make it through this recession without having to do this. We might very well had done it if it had not been for Simplot demolishing their buildings on North Caribou Road.” Fort Fairfield will be raising a total of $3,518,598 in local property taxes this year. With this current increase, the average homeowner will see an increase of around $80 to $100 in their tax bill this year.
