Fort’s ATV Trails Still Being Developed By: David DeschesneFort Fairfield Journal, August 24, 2011 The Fort Frontier ATV Club (FFATV) has had a very difficult time in establishing permanent trails this year due primarily to the rotation of crops on farmland. “Jim Milton, President of FFATV, has met with myself and the Police Department to determine the best way to get ATVs legally from one end of town to the other,” said Fort Fairfield Town Manager, Dan Foster. “To my knowledge these trails have not been finalized.” While ATV clubs need to get permission from private landowners for the use of their trail system, they must get permission from their respective town or city in order to use the public roads, where necessary to connect trails that cannot be otherwise laid out on private land. Foster says the Town wants to cooperate and be proactive in helping make this happen. “Obviously public safety is an issue and we are all working to try and maintain a proper balance in meeting the needs of ATV owners and the safety of the public.” Currently, ATVs are being allowed to travel along the back side of Riverside Park and at some point the ATV Club will be marking that trail. However, the walking trails at Riverside Park are still off -limits to ATV use.
