Graduate From Northern Maine Community College
By: David Deschesne Fort Fairfield Journal, May 30, 2012 PRESQUE ISLE—On May 19, 2012 over 250 students graduated from Northern Maine Community College (NMCC) in Presque Isle. The commencement ceremony was held again this year at The Forum in Presque Isle due to a collective audience that totaled somewhere short of 2,000 people. Commencement greetings were given by Robert Clark, trustee of the Maine Community College System and the Student address delivered by NMCC 2012 Student of the Year, Jonathan Post, from Chapman.
Mr. Post formerly owned a construction business which he had to close in 2009 due to a struggling economy. He graduates from NMCC as an R.N. and will begin his career at Cary Medical Center. Service has been a key theme for Jonathan during his time at NMCC. As president of the campus chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, the honor society for two -year colleges, he played an integral part in all of the community services projects undertaken by that group during the past three years.Under Jonathan’s leadership, Phi Theta Kappa earned the coveted 5 -star status and was named one of the top 100 chapters internationally. He has also served in the Student Nurses Association and the Student Senate, was a tutor in the Academic Success Center, and volunteers through a number of community organizations and activities.Jonathan was named a President’s Scholar at NMCC for achieving a 4.0 semester, and was named to the All -Maine Academic Team in 2011.The Commencement Address was delivered by Daniel Boyd, NMCC faculty member for automotive technology. He reiterated Post’s call for service above self and emphasized the importance of watching over the “little things” in our daily interactions with people. Whether it’s something that could save a life, or just make somebody’s day a little easier, Boyd called out to the graduates to take the extra initiative to watch out for and serve their fellow man. Boyd has been teaching Automotive Technology to students at NMCC for more than thirty years. He has demonstrated extraordinary commitment to his students and has prepared them well for their careers. He has had the opportunity to get closer than most to his students over the years. In addition to leading their learning experiences in the classroom and lab, he has traveled with students numerous times over the years to Detroit, Michigan and Windsor, Ontario, bringing them to see first -hand the complete assembly process of an automobile and its power train. Last Fall, Boyd brought four of his students to the New Hampshire Motor Speedway in Loudon to participate in the “GearWrench Racing Speed Challenge,” a tricycle race which gained national exposure for NMCC. The competition was televised on the Speed Channel and required the students to assemble the tricycle themselves before racing it on the track.Dan is retiring at the end of this academic year. NMCC President, Timothy Crowley conferred this year’s President’s Award on Dr. William Egeler, NMCC Dean of Students. The following degrees and certificates were conferred to NMCC graduates at this year’s ceremony. An asterisk * marks an Honors graduate, with a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or greater.
